Metservice says the worst of the cold snap is hitting the southern and eastern areas of the country.
Snow has fallen from Invercargill up to the Desert Road in the Central North Island.
In Christchurch snow is down to sea level.
There is snow in Wairarapa and there have been snow flurries in Wellington.
