The water watchdog says it doesn't have confidence in Wellington Water to ensure sufficient supply for the region next summer.
Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Porirua have had water restrictions in place for the past few months, as well as a continuous threat of more severe rules.
In a letter from Taumata Arowai's chief executive, local councils and Wellington Water have been asked to provide a plan outlining how they can avoid a repeat of this situation next year. That's due on Friday.
Taumata Arowai's regulatory head, Steve Taylor, spoke to Morning Report.
