Most of the country's universities are set to post a record deficit, totalling more than $60 million.
Universities say some of this is because of lower-than-expected enrolments and higher costs.
But the biggest problem is inflation exceeding funding increases.
Universities New Zealand chief executive Chris Whelan spoke to Corin Dann.
