Thick layers of red seaweed are blanketing beaches on Auckland's Hibiscus Coast.
Both Orewa and Red beach are covered in the hair-like seaweed which has been on the shorelines for more than week - and is starting to smell.
Locals say they've never seen anything like it.
RNZ reporter Melanie Earley paid a visit.
