The lifeline that was coastal shipping between Napier and Gisborne has ended.
18 voyages carrying almost 300 containers ran between the two towns while State Highway 2 was closed between Napier and Wairoa.
The Eastland Port says customers prefer the door-to-door nature of trucks, so the shipping route will end.
But the coastal shipping was much better for the environment than road freight, and there's no telling when it might be needed again.
Aotearoa Shipping Alliance spokesperson Ray Mudgway spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
