More than 1800 Auckland children are overdue for operations on their teeth, with a prediction it will get worse because there's a huge delay for routine check ups.
The children need dental work under general anaesthetic, either because it is for complex, often very painful conditions, or because they'd struggle to put up with have the work while they are awake.
The region's specialist dental service was given hundreds of thousands of dollars to fix the problem in 2020 but has been chasing its tail because the pace of referrals is increasing.
