Mega supermarket chain Foodstuffs has proposed to merge its North and South Island operations to simplify the business and save costs.
The company has approached the Commerce Commission and will put the plan to members mid next year.
Foodstuffs says it's making the change in response to the commission's review into the supermarket sector, but some commentators aren't convinced it will do anything to help customers.
