A international law expert says the conflict between Israel and Gaza is very troubling for liberal democracies like New Zealand that depend on an international rule based order.
The government has made it clear New Zealand supports Israel's right to defend itself - but has also noted that Israel must exercise restraint. It's also stood apart from its 5-eyes partners by voting for a UN resolution for a humanitarian ceasefire.
