The government wants to make a surprise cut to a senior teaching role so it can cover a hole in its budget.
More than 3000 teachers have the so-called within-school teacher job which pays them $8000 a year for extra work.
Axing it would save $24 million a year.
But the government can't do it unless teacher unions agree.
Education correspondent John Gerritsen spoke to Susie Ferguson.
