Firefighters were hoping overnight conditions would help them contain two large fires they've been battling in the Mackenzie Country region.
On Thursday night a convoy of about 50 vehicles - containing mostly tourists - successfully left the Aoraki Mt Cook area, with nobody endangered by the large fire which began on Wednesday night at Pūkaki Downs.
A second fire began Thursday afternoon near Lake Tekapo.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand incident controller Stephen Butler spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
