Bishop of Dunedin Steven Benford is hopeful services will be able to be held in the damaged St Paul's Cathedral soon, after a fire in the early hours of the morning.
The blaze erupted in the roof of the building around 3.30am on Tuesday.
Firefighters were able to contain it, but photos from inside the church show damage to the roof, with the sky visible from inside.

Benford told Morning Report he has been inside the Cathedral and is "optimistic structurally" about the damage.
"Obviously, I'd want to work with Father Tony on that to facilitate that provided we can keep safe," he said.
