Tropical Cyclone Mal is bearing down on Fiji, leading to power cuts and some flooding Tuesday night.
MetService says the cyclone upgraded to a category 3 about midnight Tuesday, but things are starting to slow down.
The strongest winds were recorded near the eye of the storm out in the open waters.
So far, eight evacuation centres have been opened with about 300 evacuees staying there.
Reporter Caleb Fotherington spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
