More than a thousand competitors have gathered in Waitangi for a weekend of long-distance waka ama paddling.
It's the most participants the competition has ever seen -- with some of the races seeing athletes paddling for up to 24 kilometres.
Ashleigh McCaull has been speaking to some of the paddlers who are about to put their endurance to the test.
