Parts of Te Waipounamu could be hit by a rare spring snowfall this week as an icy front from Antarctica moves up the country.
Snow could fall to sea level in Christchurch and Banks Peninsula on Wednesday night, and there could also be snow to 300 metres in Wellington.
NIWA meteorologist Chris Brandolino spoke to Susie Ferguson.
