The decision to lower the speed limit to 30 kilometres an hour in most of central Auckland is being greeted as long-overdue and transformative by some, a threat to productivity and another blow to motorists by others. Auckland Transport's board voted yesterday to lower the speed limits on 10 per cent of the city's urban and rural roads, which it says will prevent around 87 deaths or serious injuries over the next five years.
