Live animal exports by sea could be restarting soon. The National Party earlier this year promised to lift the ban that came into effect in April after the Labour government banned the lucrative shipments due to concerns for animal welfare.
In 2020 nearly 6,000 cattle died on a cargo ship that sank in a storm on the way to China.
Infometrics has estimated the ban would cost the country nearly $5 million a year in the short term, and around $320 million per year after that.
