The new head of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care says one of her first priorities is to gain the trust of the survivors who are assisting the inquiry.
Former district court Judge Coral Shaw replaces Sir Anand Satyanand as chair following his resignation. She was one of five commissioners appointed to the commission when it was set up last year but has been criticised by some of the survivors for not listening properly and being dismissive.
Abuse survivor Darryl Smith, who will speak to the inquiry early next year, says he hopes Judge Shaw will take a new approach.
