We were all "dead men walking." In order to help us appreciate just what happened when we repented and believed and came into the family of God, Paul offers a metaphor. But it's more than a metaphor; it's the actual state of our spiritual selves before we surrendered to Christ. We were dead. So the Christian life isn't about adopting a new philosophy, or even new habits; it requires a resurrection. And that's not a do-it-yourself project.
