It was what he wrote and then tried to get cleared with his chain of command that pissed them off. He was saying what they all felt about the the state of America in general and the Obama Administration's sea change of policy that affected the boots on the ground: we need to return to a general feeling of American exceptionalism by being responsible citizens and that being PC about war is a loser of a strategy.

At the end of the day, his command was saying one thing to him and agreeing with flawed government policies to their COs.

That said, he didn't give away national security secrets or tell about operational details. He spoke out in clear and measured words what no one dares to say in this P.C. world: how current policy and politics are getting in the way of America's present and future.

That hypocrisy made him livid because and led to his being forced to resign for speaking out. Carl loved being a SEAL and would have had a long career in the Navy.

He took an administrative discharge from the Navy under troop reduction and was given a honorable discharge which they tend clawed-back by paperwork error months later and without the proper procedure. In essence, he was denied his due process rights under the UMC.
