Ep 519: In Space No One Can Hear You Yawn

April 05, 2024 04:00 - 5 KB

In 1979 Ridley Scott combined, sci-fi, suspense, and a the nightmares of H. R. Giger  to create the groundbreaking film Alien. Seven years later James Cameron doubled down, giving us the sci-fi, action thriller, Aliens. After these two films Alien(s) fans eagerly awaited the next bold, innovative pivot, they would see in this franchise. They’re still kind of waiting. This August the folks at 21st Century Fox (recently consumed alive by Disney) take another turn at bat with, Aliens: Romulus, w...

Ep 518: Aliens and Ghosts and Sandworms, Oh My!

March 29, 2024 04:00 - 1 hour - 29.9 MB

As few mortals can consume media at Tod’s pace this week the Regular Joes take a SPOILER FREE pass at two recent film that two of the three have seen. First is Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire the newest entry in the recently resuscitated 1980’s franchise. Next is Dune Part II, the somewhat more honestly titled, follow up to Dune (2021). But first, they address the alien in the room. Three Body Problem, the novel by Chinese author, Liu Cixin, was considered by many to be unadaptable for film or TV...

Ep 517: Past Masters

March 22, 2024 04:00 - 1 hour - 25.7 MB

Over the last quarter century, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have collaborated to spotlight the extraordinary contributions of the greatest generation in the Second World War. Following the universally lauded Band of Brothers (2001)  and  its successor The Pacific (2010) their most recent effort, Masters of the Air just completed its Apple TV + tour of duty. The Regular Joes deliver a post mission debrief, covering the high points and most resonant elements of the series. Like Barry and Dave...

Ep 516: Walking Back

March 08, 2024 05:00 - 1 hour - 68.1 MB

More than five years ago Barry, Dave and Tod walked away from onetime favorite, The Walking Dead. After enduring eight grueling years, from episode 1 to episode 5 of season 9, they vowed to never return. This week the fifth Walking Dead series, Walking Dead: Those who Live, debuted with the premise of reunite Rick and Michonne after five + years in real time, and who knows how long in nearly unreconcilable Walking Dead time. Can the Joes pick up at this point? Will they want to? Queue up this...

March 01, 2024 05:00 - 1 hour - 24.5 MB

In recent years two auction houses have dominated the competition for prop collector’s attention and dollars. In the coming weeks, both The Prop Store (March 12th - 14th) and Heritage Auctions (March 20 - 24th) are going head to head with large scale multi day prop and entertainment memorabilia auctions. As the Regular Joe’s preview the HUGE respective catalogs for you they find a lot of similar items, as well as some, that are be familiar from other recent auctions. The unique thing about th...

Ep 514: Final Frontier Fashion

February 23, 2024 05:00 - 1 hour - 20.7 MB

This week the Regular Joes, plus subject expert Brian Mix, address the topic of Star Trek uniforms. Note: please don’t call them “costumes.” That’s like calling an action figure a “doll.” With nearly sixty years of Star Trek, eleven series, and thirteen films, which of the dozens of uniforms would make the most sense for doing your day job in space? When would you want a jumpsuit, and when would you not?  Why all the flaps? How is it that certain styles hold up and why other visions of future...

Ep 513: Barry & Tom‘s Excellent Adventure

February 16, 2024 05:00 - 2 hours - 37 MB

This week the Regular Joes are again joined by Tom Spina of Regal Robot and Tom Spina Designs. Barry and Tom recently traveled to Skywalker Ranch to complete research for Regal Robot’s newest limited run offering, a faithful reproduction of the Wampa puppet from The Empire Strikes Back. They dive deep into the painstaking level of effort and detail that goes into reproducing an item like this. Seriously, have you ever tried counting Wampa teeth? They also talk about what’s it’s like to visit ...

Ep 512: Timeless or Tarnished?

February 09, 2024 05:00 - 1 hour - 67.4 MB

Prompted by Dave’s recent re-watch of 1971 Oscar winner The French Connection the Regular Joe’s dive into the question, Does it Hold Up? More specifically why do some very successful mainstream films stand the test of time while others don’t. How some films like The Godfather (1973) achieve immortality, while others like Marty (1956) seemingly have the lifespan of a mayfly. Is it about transcending the moment in which they are created? Does being a period piece guarantee ageless. Or do certai...

Ep 511: Masters & Marvels

February 02, 2024 05:00 - 1 hour - 28.2 MB

This week the Regular Joes finally get around to looking at The Marvels, the 33rd and worst performing of all the Marvel Cinematic Universe offerings.  Did it require too much homework upfront? Are Marvel bro’s just not into women? Or is it another harbinger of doom for an overworked franchise? Apple TV+ just keeps cranking out ambitious series. This week ushers in the two episode debut of Masters of the Air. The Spielberg/Hanks produced series is a follow up to Band of Brothers and The Pacif...

Ep 510: Apple+ Picking

January 26, 2024 05:00 - 53 minutes - 19.6 MB

Barry is back from his most recent big adventure (more on that soon) and the Regular Joes sit down to talk about the wrap-up of two shows. When Apple TV+ launched in November 2019, it seemed like they were late to the party. And, despite the tech companies long-standing interest in creating the future, no one really imagined that Apple would quickly become the most prolific producer of sci-fi on television. With the recent conclusion of the alternate timeline space program drama For all Manki...

Ep 509: Last call for 2023

January 12, 2024 13:00 - 1 hour - 32.8 MB

As 2023 fades into memory the Regular Joes, along with Irregular Joes Derryl DePriest and Brian Mix, take a look back to the year that was. What were their favorite films, TV shows, events and collectibles? Conversely, what were their least favorites. And while they’re at it, in a year, when many long, anticipated projects failed to find audiences, what did they see as the most overlooked and under appreciated offerings of 2023? The gang also note some of what they are looking forward to in 2...

Ep 508: Rebel Moan

January 05, 2024 05:00 - 57 minutes - 21.5 MB

Zack Snyder has made some good films. Rebel Moon: Part I. A Child of Fire is not one of them. Described as both the start of a new sci-fi franchise, and the byproduct of a failed Star Wars pitch, what Rebel Moon most resembles is amalgamation of scenes and themes from a long list of other familiar films. You haven’t seen it? Here’s a recap, Gamora, who is estranged from her evil dad, rounds up slightly less than seven samurai, to take on an evil galactic empire before being betrayed by Han So...

Ep 507: What’s in the Boxes - 2023 Edition

December 31, 2023 23:18 - 50 minutes - 20.3 MB

As 2023 came to a close, the Regular Joes convened at a not so secret location (Dave’s House) to break bread and to prove yet again that with a little thought you can actually buy gifts for people who literally have everything, it’s the annual Regular Joe’s gift exchange where you listen in as we open presents!  Then , as an added bonus, our wives join us to discuss the filmography of everyone’s favorite action hero, Tom Cruise and evaluate which of his films are “unwatchable”, the results ma...

Ep 506: A Disturbance in The Force

December 22, 2023 05:00 - 1 hour - 30.2 MB

This week the Regular Joes check out the recent documentary A Disturbance in The Force (available on disc or stream) which provides the best explanation to date on how and why the 1978 Star Wars Christmas Special came to be. As part of their rigorous preparation the Joes also dug up and watched the first episode of season three of the Donnie and Marie show from 1977, which included a Star Wars skit. This provided much needed context and forced Tod to come clean on his childhood Marie Osmond c...

Ep 505: What’s in the GIFT Box

December 15, 2023 05:00 - 1 hour - 28.6 MB

With the holidays fast approaching the Regular Joes pause to reflect upon the difficulty of finding gifts for people who are hard to buy for. You know, the folks who have everything, or those people who  don’t hesitate to buy themselves things … even two weeks before Christmas (see also, Barry Kay). They cover electronics, services, gadgets and several things people don’t yet know they need. All just in time to make those last minute purchases. There’s also Random topics and 2/3 of a round of...

Ep 504: Error, Title Not Found

December 08, 2023 05:00 - 1 hour - 25.4 MB

This week Dave comes back from vacation and the other Regular Joes, plus the Irregular Joes , catch him up on what they have been up to. Barry checked out this past weekend’s Annual WinterCon. Brian made another trek to Ticonderoga to help update the Star Trek Set Tour and hang with Shatner. Tod gives his thoughts on Godzilla Minus One. And, late arrival Derryl, has been unboxing auction winnings and action figures. There’s also a plethora of Random topics and a Round of What’s in the Box. Th...

Ep 503: Be Kind, Please Rewind: The 1990’s

December 01, 2023 05:00 - 1 hour - 30.5 MB

Prompted by Dave’s recent observation about the scarcity of good sci-fi / fantasy / action / adventure genre films from the 1990’s the Regular Joes dive into the last decade of the last millennium. And while the 1990’s does not holdup to the decade immediately prior, there are a good many films from a wide range of genres that are worth a second look. Though opinions vary on several titles, it is clear the 1990’s yielded a few gems. One of the best sequels ever in Terminator 2 Judgement Day 1...

Ep 502: Of Mars and Monsters

November 24, 2023 05:00 - 1 hour - 25.5 MB

As we dig into our Thanksgiving leftovers, in a year end oddly without a Disney+ Star Wars series, the Regular Joes take a look at one new show and one returning Apple TV+ series to fill the void. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters shares a universe with the four most recent Godzilla and King Kong films. In dual time lines, and with at least one very unique casting decision, the series details the secret events prior to Kong: Skull Island 2017 and just after Godzilla 2014. With a minimum of SPOILERS...

Ep 501: Original Fit Podcast

November 17, 2023 05:00 - 1 hour - 24.9 MB

This week, Barry, Dave and Tod settle back into their normal routine. There’s no celebrity interviews or overly complicated recording set ups. It’s just the three of them catching up on random topics, debating the merits of the recently concluded Disney+ series Loki, and taking a last pass at the just wrapped Star Trek Lower Decks season four. Note: there is agreement on only one of these topics. There’s also a round of What’s in the box. Really, it's just a plain ol’ regular episode. Pretty ...

Episode 500!

November 13, 2023 05:00 - 1 hour - 44.5 MB

Yes, our 500th episode, quite a milestone and we have a show worthy of that milestone. We travel to Rhode Island Comic Con for our 10th time and interview possibly our best guests yet! John Rhys Davies of Indiana Jones and Lord of the Rings fame as well as director, producer and make-up effects creator Greg Nicotero. Both sit down for lengthy discussions and a great time was had by all. Barry could not be there in person but joins remotely.  Irregular Joes Derryl and Brian made the trip and j...

Ep 499: The Sniff Test

November 03, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 30.2 MB

It’s that time again when the Regular Joe’s thoughts turn to the Rhode Island Comicon. Making the trek to Providence has been a RJ tradition for 10 years, pretty much as long as the podcast has been running. This year as they prepare, they take a second round (apparently this is now tradition as well) at rating the huge list of convention guests, based on autograph, appeal, visual appeal, and …. wait for it, aromatic appeal. This stems from an entirely reasonable comment Tod once made about K...

Ep 498: Unplugged Fall 2023 Edition

October 27, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 22.2 MB

While recent shows have been somewhat narrowly focused, this week’s is decidedly not. One might even walk away with the impression that there was no discernible plan at all. There is some (inevitable) follow up from the recent auction, followed by a deep dive into … well, nothing in particular. There is a segment of Random Topics that never really ends, and some talk about current, and upcoming TV shows. So really very much what you have come to expect these past ten plus years. Thanks for li...

Ep 497: 7101 Who Are You?

October 20, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 27.4 MB

There has never been an event  like the now completed Heritage Greg Jien Collection Auction of props, costumes and model miniatures. The Regular Joes, as well as Irregular Joes Derryl DePriest and Brian Mix, each went in with a wish list and high hopes. In the aftermath, the five of them get together to discuss their wins and losses (ranging from the highly recognizable to the incredibly obscure) and some of the history making sales that came out of the marathon event.  Including a fair bit o...

Ep 496: Star . . . Things

October 13, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 27.7 MB

The newest Disney+ Star Wars series eight episode run has wrapped. Ahsoka had the advantage of established characters from Clone Wars, Rebels and the no longer canon Expanded Universe. But was likewise burdened with two Galaxy’s worth of expectations. Find out how this played out for the Regular Joes, who started with perspectives ranging from basic familiarity to deep mythology immersion. From the Star Trek side of things Very Short Treks (find them on YouTube) is series of short animated vi...

Ep 495: To The Max!

October 06, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 24.7 MB

This week the Regular Joe’s once again hit up Brian Mix’s deep bench of knowledgeable, and well-connected, associates. It’s rapidly becoming clear, if you were into Sci Fi and on the West Coast  in the last half century you probably know Brian. This time they are joined by Max Cervantes, a professional model builder in the film industry, and a prolific background extra throughout the Star Trek franchise. So while you may not recognize his name, it’s pretty much assured that you’ve seen his wo...

Ep 494: Nascent Nerds

September 29, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 30.6 MB

Prompted by photos Brian recently shared, which revealed the depth and dedication of his own early nerdiness, Barry, Dave and Tod delve into their own, not quite, secret origins. At what point did all of us cross over from simply liking a given thing, like Star Trek, or Batman, to engaging with it on an interactive, creative or otherwise expansive level? Buying the books, tracking down the merchandise, costuming, DYI, and seeking out like minded souls are all early manifestations of Nerddom. ...

Ep 493: Battle of the (Streaming Service) Stars

September 22, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 24.9 MB

It’s another one of those weeks, when fortune, or scheduling executives at Disney+ and Paramount+, favors us with new episodes of both a Star Trek and Star Wars series.  Star Trek Lower Decks, the animated series that only the most uptight Star Trek fans can’t find room in their hearts for, is back for a fourth season. This time around Mariner, Boimler and the other ensigns get a rank upgrade, and a new crew mate. Because any good Trek recipe can be improved by adding a little Vulcan.  At th...

Ep 492: The Greg Jein Collection

September 15, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 28.1 MB

This week the Regular Joes take a  look at the Greg Jein collection of Sci Fi movie and TV props, production models, costumes and other memorabilia which Heritage Auctions will be putting on the block starting October 14. To call this auction unprecedented is a gross understatement. The trove of objects the late special effects wizard amassed in his life time is simply astounding. The scope and quality of items is almost beyond belief.  The Regular Joes guide through this once in a lifetime o...

Ep 491: Far, Far Away

September 08, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 27.3 MB

The Regular Joes have been AWOL for a few weeks but Barry has a good excuse. This week he fills us all on on his secret trip to a certain ranch … far, far away. On a similar theme, it’s time to talk Ashoka. The latest Disney+ series faces the daunting task of fusing elements of the live action and animated Star Wars universes. Does it stand on its own? How do the Rebels series characters translate to a live action, post original trilogy setting? The hosts offer differing perspectives from dif...

Ep 490: Hit or Miss

August 18, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 28.6 MB

The teeming juggernaut that is Disney has a whole lot of projects in the hopper right now. If recent history has demonstrated anything not everything they announce actually comes to pass. Anyone still waiting for Patty Jenkin’s Rogue Squadron? With a couple of recent big budget commercial failures to reflect on rumor has it Disney honcho Bob Iger is having some second thoughts. Always helpful, the Regular Joes weigh in giving Bob some feedback on where he might trim the fat. As we ease into t...

Ep 489: Sub-Par Rhapsody?

August 11, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 25.1 MB

After last week’s overwhelmingly positive appraisal of Star Trek Strange New Worlds season two it was perhaps inevitable that the most ambitious, or was it, misguided? episode of the year might not be received as well. Fans are divided on the first ever Trek musical episode, Sub-Space Rhapsody, and not surprisingly, so are the Regular Joes. With Brian Mix filling the fourth seat It’s a split decision. Dave recounts taking in an event that everyone should have on their to-do list. Then Tod pos...

EP 488: Going Boldly and Going Nowhere

August 04, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 27.5 MB

The Disney+ Marvel series have been hit or miss. When they are good (WandaVision) they use their extended runtime to experiment with concepts and formats, expanding and developing characters in ways impossible within the limits of a film. When they are bad (Falcon and the Winter Soldier) they flail about wasting time while underutilizing established characters. Secret Invasion the most recent MCU series, manages to kill two characters, completely discredit another, and dismiss any notion that...

Ep 487: Our Man in San Diego

July 28, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 26.1 MB

With the ongoing Writer’s Guild of America strike expanding to encompass the Screen Actors Guild this year’s SanDiego Comic Con was like no other. Who better to navigate the celebrity barren landscape than our man Brian Mix, veteran of more than 30 previous SDCCs. Find out what cool stuff he actually did see as he explored this strange new reality. Speaking of strange and new, for the benefit of road warrior Brian, and other folks with clearly misplaced priorities, there’s also some spoiler f...

Ep 486: Run, Tom, Run!

July 21, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 26.1 MB

This week the seventh Mission Impossible film finally reached theaters, proving that, a quarter century on, this franchise and Tom Cruise can’t be stopped. If you were a fan of this series, as Dave believes everyone should be, Mission impossible: Dead Reckoning Part I is everything you’ve been waiting for. You get to see Tom run, a lot, as well as survive all manner of death defying stunts that would easy kill any other 60 -year-old man. But this is Tom Cruise, so things like gravity and age ...

Ep 485: Droidsmith

July 14, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 21 MB

A farm boy dreams of a life of adventure and finds his place in a Galaxy Far, Far Away. We could be talking about Luke SkyWalker, but it is actually this week’s guest Micheal McMaster, droid builder extraordinaire. You may not know his name but you have seen his work in the recent Star Wars Films and series on Disney+. Micheal sits down with the Regular Joes and mutual friend Brian Mix to talk about his journey, his robots, and what it takes to bring animated characters like Pixar’s WALL-E, a...

Ep 484: It’s Not The Years . . .

July 07, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 31.1 MB

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is in theaters. The artifact at the center of this James Mangold directed sequel teases the possibility of rewriting history, which is not much different than than goal of this fifth and final Indy film. After the much panned Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) will audiences warm up to this second, or arguably, third pass at closing out the Indy saga? Can the old formula of frantic street chases, Nazi punches, and near death escapes that made Raiders of ...

Ep 483: Hit It ... Again

June 30, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 33.6 MB

After what seems an interminable wait (actually 11 months and 14 days) Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season two has launched on Paramount +. Pike, Spock, Number One, and the whole crew are back in the much lauded prelude to the original series. The Regular Joes give their thoughts on the first few episodes as the settle in for a sophomore season that promises more Trek that actually feels like Trek. Next the Joes close out their epic turn at ranking nearly half a decade of super hero this wee...

Ep 482: In a Flash

June 23, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 34.3 MB

It’s been a long time coming but DC’s The Flash is finally in theaters. A fact which has not seemed to motivate a large portion of the movie going public. While the scarlet speedster’s solo (In name only) outing is failing at the box office, and with critics, it has been well received by viewers, like out hosts, who have actually seen it. Find out why the Regular Joes place this movie in the top tier of DC films. Note: there will be SPOILERS, but most of the bigger reveals are already in the ...

Ep 481 Super, and less than Super

After the hosts get caught up they dive into part 1 of their epic rating rundown of all the DC/Marvel (mostly) Superhero films since 1978. There are quite a few surprises, as well as several films you haven’t thought of in years...and a few others you wish you could forget, but with this week’s long awaited release of The Fla...

Ep 480 Spy vs. Spy

May 26, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 22 MB

OK, so here’s the elevator pitch. We cast two really attractive people, one man, one woman. We establish a little chemistry, then we send them on a nonstop cycle of high-speed chases and near death experiences. There’s a certain amount of spy stuff. Lots of people shooting at them. Various bad guys with vague foreign accents. They should be after something? Let’s make it a high tech briefcase thingie. We could be talking about Amazon‘s streaming series, Citadel, or Apple+ made for streaming f...

Ep 479: 10 Years And Counting

May 19, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 30.7 MB

If you were wondering how you celebrate 10 years of podcasting, the answer is by doing pretty much what you’ve been doing for the previous decade. This week The Regular Joe’s Podcast hits the 10 year mark, and we commemorate this milestone by getting the whole gang together and revisiting one of our earliest themes, “Tools of the Trade.” As long time listeners will know, in the early days of the podcast the Joes covered a lot of lists. This time around they run down, or perhaps, update, all t...

Ep 478: Cosmic Closure

May 12, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 25.7 MB

In the summer of 2014 James Gunn transformed Guardians of the Galaxy from a largely unknown, but highly regarded, Marvel comic to a box office blockbuster. For nine years we have followed the exploits of Star-Lord, Gomora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot along with others they picked up along the way. As the much delayed, and purportedly final, entry in the Guardians saga hits theaters the Joes weigh in on the newest Marvel film, and the franchise as a whole. Are we really ready to say goodbye to the...

Ep 477: Creator of Rare Antiquities

May 05, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 33.8 MB

This week the Regular Joe’s are joined once again by Tom Spina of Regal Robot, and Tom Spina designs. After a curiously lengthy discussion about eating habits, Tom fills the Joes in on some of his newer projects. While most folks likely associate Regal Robot with meticulously crafted Star Wars prop replicas and very cool deco items, Tom and his dedicated group of artisans have recently moved into the world of Indiana Jones. As die hard Indy fans are all about the gear and the artifacts we can...

476: Star . . . Was

April 28, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 26.3 MB

After ten weeks of Star Trek: Picard and eight of Star Wars: The Mandolorian you might think the Regular Joes would have run out of things to say. Actually, if you’ve been listening for any length of time, you wouldn’t suspect that in the least. This week, the Joes close the book on these two series as Picard delivers its finale and the Mandalorian wraps its third season.  Because the regular hosts possess little or no objectivity when it comes to these two franchises, they sought out a neutr...

475 Penultimate Prognostications

April 21, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 30.4 MB

It seems like the view from a parallel universe. This season actually saw a few episodes of Star Wars: The Mandalorian that were panned by critics and fans. Has some of the shine come off the Beskar armor that previously made Mando the only blaster proof property in the Star Wars universe? Has Mando jumped the Krayt Dragon? And perhaps most importantly, will the bottom fall out of the market for Grogu merchandise? Meanwhile, Paramount’s Star Trek: Picard has somehow managed to deliver the ser...

474: Coming Distractions

April 14, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 69.2 MB

474: Coming Distractions In last week’s episode the Joe’s caught up on trailers for upcoming films and shows. In the week since Star Wars Celebration 2023 happened and there is a whole lot more news on upcoming stuff. In recent years there have been a lot of soft announcements on who’s going to direct a Star Wars Film … maybe … someday. But it now seems like there actually are three Star Wars films in the “going to happen” category. Stay tuned. The final trailer for Indiana Jones, and the Dia...

April 07, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 25.3 MB

This week the Regular Joes dive into a recent batch of trailers, including Secret Invasion on Disney+ … promising, Blue Beatle from DC … interesting, Citadel … on Amazon Prime … intriguing, as well as a new Guardians Volume lll spot … more Rocket anxiety inducing. Along the way they make an extended trip down a Kevin Costner themed Rabbit hole. Bet you didn’t see that coming. There’s also What’s in the Box and the usual round of Random Topics. Thanks for listening!

472: Nerdvana

March 31, 2023 04:00 - 1 hour - 28.9 MB

Just in case you were getting tired of the Regular Joe’s weekly updates of back to back Mandalorian and Star Trek: Picard episodes they decided to switch things up a bit. This Week they bring in remote correspondence Derryl DePriest and Sean Huxter who report on last weekend’s Toylanta … toy show … in Atlanta, giving the lowdown from their respective roles as vendor, presenter, and of course, collectors. After that, you get the usual update of back to back Mandalorian and Star Trek: Picard. I...
