Jeremiah 31:31-34
In Jeremiah, we see God telling His people that there will be a day when a new covenant is made with them. We have this image of the sinful heart that has had difficulty keeping the Mosaic law being remade into a new heart that desires to know and love the Lord. No longer will the people of God rely on external laws; instead, the law of love will be written on our hearts, and we will long to be like Jesus.
Doing the right things, saying the right things—none of these will in and of themselves make us like Jesus. Checking a spiritual to-do list isn’t going to make us like Jesus. The one thing that will make us more like Jesus every day is love.
Jesus’ love for us makes it possible for us to choose Jesus freely. In choosing Jesus, we are given the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit miraculously and mysteriously makes us more and more like Jesus as we love and live as Jesus did.
