In this fourth installment of Ryle’s Thoughts for Young Men, he addresses the devil’s tactics. In 1.4, Ryle explains, “the devil uses special diligence to destroy the souls of young men, and they seem not to know it.”
Ryle draws attention to the devil’s use of deception by saying, “He will tell you at the beginning of your lives, it is too soon to serve God, - he will tell you at the end, it is too late.” Ryle goes on to show how our enemy, the devil, is mighty, restless and cunning.
We should be careful to help our children understand we are responsible for our actions and that we shouldn’t make a habit of blaming our sin on the devil. However, we have a very real and motivated enemy who seeks to destroy us and we should not fail to remind our children of him.
