Monique DeBose Rebelling FOR Authentic Expression and Racial Justice

Monique DeBose is one of the most multi-talented people I know in the world. She is an award-winning leading vocal improvisationalist whose song, Rally Call, garnered more than 100,000 views on YouTube within a week from its release. Meanwhile, her one-woman play, Mulatto Math: Summing Up the Race Equation in America, has won the 2018 Encore! Producers’ Award. Monique is a passionate playwright and ‘artivist’ whose work is driven by her mission to help people see from “black” and “white” to full color.

 

Monique joins me today to discuss her vision and mission of standing up for racial justice. She shares her experience of growing up with mixed heritage and describes the experience that prompted her to speak her truth. She underscores the value of asking for help and support and explains why parents need to cultivate social awareness in their children. She also discusses the ideas that drove her to write Rally Call and Mulatto Math and highlights how working on one’s healing journey can help others start their own.
