Mike B is a trip.

He’s known as a DJ’s DJ, which means he’s a talented selector who can cross genres and command dance floors in a variety of environments. After apprenticing under hip hop mix show pioneer Stretch Armstrong of Stretch & Bobbito fame, he left the gritty New York scene and returned to his hometown of LA to launch one of the most influential events in nightlife history - Banana Split - with partners DJ AM (RIP) and Steve Aoki (Dim Mak Records).

Mike as a personality comes off as a cross between a Serious Musician and The Fat Jew; at times earnest about the love for music that has driven him since before he was a teen, at others cavalier about his occasional quests for drugs and sex (boy does this man have stories!). Amid the reminiscing about his come-up, and about that one time when he was the DJ at my wedding, Mike gave us three valuable lessons that anyone embarking on a passion-based career should take seriously.

These three lessons came from specific points in Mike's career - 'Be Fearless' learned while producing Snoop Dogg's reality TV show 'Fatherhood,' 'Work as hard as it takes' learned while dj'ing a world famous event he helped curate and create, and 'Find a need, then fill it,' learned while exploring the music scene of Paris and figuring ways to bring that style and energy to LA.
