Every brown girl should know that she is beautiful! Beautiful Flower is an ode to brown girls. Designed to boost confidence and build self-esteem, this beautifully illustrated picture book celebrates and praises the beauty of dark-skinned, African-American girls.
✅ ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Ayana Alexis Vicks-Jason is a nationally recognized scholar and native of New Orleans, LA. She is currently a Howard University student in Washington, D.C.
Ayana shares that as she has been dealing with colourism a lot in her life, she first wanted to write to speak to her inner child. "I was reading it one day, and I just thought how if I knew this as a child, how different my life would have been. I came up with the idea to make it into a book because I know how important it is for young black girls to feel they are powerful, gorgeous, intelligent, and can do anything they aspire to do. We often need reminding as we are told to feel otherwise. it is important to know your worth and values. So that was the reason why I wanted to really publish it and make an ode to brown girls."
