Rap Thought Podcast

107 episodes - English - Latest episode: almost 3 years ago - ★★★★★ - 12 ratings

Matt and Brandon are the Rap Thought Podcast. Each episode, they share their thoughts and perspectives on a hiphop album chosen at random. From the 80s to current releases, no album is off limits. This is not a review podcast; conversely they break down and analyze the albums that are chosen for them. Their vision is to bring the listener along with them while they dive deep into each album. They're not your average album reviewers, they incite thought and meaning behind the music. The hosts, Matt & Brandon have very different backgrounds and perspectives when it comes to music, society and culture which leads to thought provoking dialogue centered around the albums they discuss. These conversations will lead to much more than just the music as they take a deeper look into the context and environment surrounding the release of each record discussed. Matt was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley in Southern California attending small private schools. His first hip hop was Beastie Boys License to Ill in 3rd grade and since then he has been a hip hop head immersing himself in all things rap since then. Brandon grew up in the North Bay Area about 1 hour north of San Fransisco. He has lived in small towns his whole life and has an insatiable knack for questioning everything to understand it. Brandon's first introduction to rap was at a young age and ever since then he has been breaking down lyrics of his favorite rap songs.Matt & Brandon are the Rap Thought Podcast.

Jay-Z - Kingdom Thoughts

March 31, 2021 14:00 - 1 hour - 53.1 MB

I’m 2003, Jay-z called it quits with the Black Album and went out in a firestorm of bullets. However, it only took him three years to determine that he wasn’t ready to vacate his spot in the game, and returned with Kingdom Come. Now at “30 Something”, having done it all, what does he have to offer? A recurring theme is paying homage to the past to understand the present, and taking that up a few levels to build and secure a future for himself and his family. If you’re looking for some “Treats for the kiddies”, perhaps you’re in the “Wrong Place”. However, there’s “No Need for Alarm”, as the album title for this week’s episode suggests, as Matt and Brandon cover Del the Funky Homosapien. Che Noir - As Thoughts Intended

March 03, 2021 15:00 - 1 hour - 48.5 MB

If you’re looking for an album that eloquently illustrates someone’s upbringing in a tough environment, while reflecting how it has influenced the person that they are today, it’s recommended that you “Follow the Wisdom” of this week’s artist featured on the Rap Thought Podcast, Che Noir. Perhaps this album is “As God Intended” (double entendre on purpose, hold your applause), but either way, Che kicks a lot of knowledge around the downside of being “Money Oriented”, where the focus should b...

Eminem - Infinite Thoughts

February 24, 2021 15:00 - 1 hour - 44 MB

We all know The Slim Shady LP, The Eminem Show... most love MMLP and vehemently hate Revival. However, the one that doesn’t make a lot of conversations is Eminem’s 96’ project Infinite. It’s crazy to think that Em has dropped at least 2 projects in each decade since then, but what was the style like prior to his association with drugs? Tune in this week with Brandon and Matt as they take a look at this debut album, as Slim Shady explores the rap landscape with radio friendly lyrics in search...

February 17, 2021 15:00 - 1 hour - 46.4 MB

Th1rt3en - A Magnificent Day for Thoughts

February 10, 2021 15:00 - 1 hour - 50.1 MB

What if we are all animals trapped within the cage that is our city? Cults are popping up holding oppressive values, and it’s up to us to to traverse the “Yellowbrick” road to sever the “Goat’s Head”, all with “triskaidekaphobia” lurking in the shadows. If all this and then some grabs your attention, perhaps “A Beautiful Day for an Exorcism” might be of interest. Tech N9ne - Anghellic Thoughts

January 13, 2021 15:00 - 1 hour - 54.9 MB

“Angelic” is defined in the dictionary as 1) relating to angels, and 2) exceptionally beautiful, innocent or kind. But what happens when you blend that with a “Tormented” and  “Cursed” individual stuck in “Purgatory”? You get Anghellic by the “Sinister Tech” (N9ne). This 2001 album touches on the complex dichotomy of good and evil, as Tech struggles with his vices (sex, drugs, alcohol, etc.), while also trying to balance his personal life with his stage life. Tune in this week with Brandon a...

Ultramagnetic MCs - Critical Beat Thoughts

December 30, 2020 15:00 - 1 hour - 44 MB

This week on the Rap Thought Pod, Brandon and Matt “Ease Back” and  “Travel at the speed of thought” with Critical Beatdown by Ultramagetic MCS. Dropped in ‘88, this album sits well with talking down on other MCs, staking their claim while giving  props to the dj at the same time. However, how much of of that formula is needed to get that point across? How strong are tracks when they discuss the “royal” you versus a particular person? These thoughts and more are discussed this week. Check o...

Tyler The Creator - Scum Thoughts Flower Boy

December 23, 2020 15:00 - 1 hour - 52.7 MB

If you’re a low key casual listener of Tyler the Creator like Brandon and Matt are, perhaps you only encounter his music by slim chances. Maybe the only knowledge you have of him are the outlandish content he puts in his music, or the antics he gets into with Odd Future. However, when putting an album out, (particularly this week’s episode on Flower Boy) where you want to address all the feels you’ve been going through, and making it on a more personal level than past projects, what will be ...

O.C. - Jewelz Thoughts

December 09, 2020 15:00 - 55 minutes - 38.2 MB

This week on the Rap Thought Pod, Brandon and Matt hit the 90’s once more for OC’s “Jewelz”. With some familiar vibes, such as claiming to be the best MC in NY fashion, and story telling to some Dj Preimier boom bap, the album is reminiscent to previous albums. However, when you claim this to be your world because you are the chosen one, and declare war games on other MCs, can you maintain that position and stand out from the competition? Check all this and more this week. Check out more he...

KMD - Thought Bastard

November 18, 2020 15:00 - 1 hour - 45.5 MB

“Bl_ck B_st_rds”. Read that, then study the sambo figure being lynched on the cover, then let it be known that the album was shelved because of the controversial content. KMD’s 1993 project was later formally released in 2001, and then had some rap thoughts put on it by Brandon and Matt for this weeks episode. As this album is dissected, questions asking if looks can be deceiving, if the themes are as controversial now as they were then, and if the content matches the controversy arise in th...

Lloyd Banks - The Hunger For Thoughts

November 11, 2020 15:00 - 1 hour - 46.9 MB

When Lloyd Banks dropped The Hunger for More in 2004, what was he talking about? Money? Power? Respect? Fame? An ambiguous statement doesn’t ask for an answer, and he wants that interpretation to be left to the listener. He wants it all, and this week, Brandon and Matt break this album down track by track and give your their rap thoughts on the G-Unit member’s debut solo album. Check out more here! November 04, 2020 15:00 - 1 hour - 67.5 MB

Throughout the album, he goes in and out about how his come up and how it influenced and contributed to his lifestyle today. As he ...

Sa-Roc - The Sharecropper's Thoughts

October 21, 2020 14:00 - 1 hour - 58.6 MB

“...rather inspire truth than entertain you.” If you’re looking for the stereotypical female rap artist that’s more about image than content, this week’s episode isn’t it as Sa-Roc raps “I’m more widely known for my hippocampus than my hips and thighs” from her latest drop, “The Sharecropper’s Daughter”. There’s quite a bit to unpack with this album, as she invites us in to her own struggles and experiences, and ties it in with generational trauma inherited through family. Each vulnerable tr...

October 14, 2020 14:00 - 55 minutes - 37.9 MB

This week on the Rap Thought Pod, Brandon and Matt take a listen to “Fadanuf fa Erybody” by the Odd Squad. Not to be confused with PBS Kids “Odd Squad”, this group, AKA “The Coughee Brothaz” is for sure not your after school program. However, if the program you’re seeking requires jazz produced beats by a blind producer/rapper named Rob Quest, a funky style by Devin the Dude, and additional funny lyrics by Smugg Mugg, this pot smoking, pit diving good vibes record might be what you’re lookin...

October 07, 2020 14:00 - 1 hour - 53.4 MB

With all the tracks exuding some form of confidence along with other elements, you won’t leave wondering why the album was given the name it was. With all that, does it have the “potential” to be...

September 16, 2020 14:00 - 1 hour - 42.1 MB

For this week’s episode, Brandon and Matt take a look at the genie in the lamp, a stupid doo doo dumb young black brotha rapper gone bad. Jean Grae - Thoughts Week

September 09, 2020 14:00 - 1 hour - 45.6 MB

On this week’s episode of the Rap Thought Podcast, we touch on Jean Grae’s “This Week”. She is not another mainstream female artist only talking about WAP and selling sex. Aside from some filler here and there, we left considering her an underrated artist that isn’t talked about enough. High energy, bars and flow that could keep up with most of the people out there, is that not enough to contend with the other high profile artists? What is this X-Men inspired artist about?
