Range & Slope

10 episodes - English - Latest episode: about 4 years ago - ★★★★★ - 14 ratings

Range & Slope is an audio journey through Colorado. It is a show best listened to on headphones on a snow-capped mountain peak, a wide-open prairie, or a dust-painted mesa. We represent Colorado brilliantly in sound, telling stories that shine a light on Colorado life.

Each episode opens and closes with an intriguing soundprint from somewhere in the state. Episodes also feature an audio story creatively produced by one of the devoted audio storytellers who make up The Range and Slope Collective. Our members make immersive, engaging work in a collaborative, non-hierarchical atmosphere.

Soundprint: The National Western Stock Show Parade. Recorded by Megan Arellano. With every episode we make, we hear a lot of amazing things. And we don’t always have a way to include them in our episodes. So, we thought we’d share some of that old tape that’s been sitting in the archives, gathering dust. Instead of one big story, we have three shorter stories. And we’ll also talk a little bit about our process. It’s also a little taste of the type of extra material you’ll get if you become...

I found my way to the edge of a nuclear-reactor sized hole and talked A LOT about regional pizza styles. Back in September, Matthew told us a story about a man and a...

Soundprint: DMV, Tremont Branch. Recorded by Rae Solomon. For many thrifty Coloradans, Labor Day used to be more than just an excuse to take off work. It was the shopping event of the year. Starting in 1954, and for many Labor Day weekends thereafter, the Gart Brothers would throw open their doors and welcome customers with discounted prices on outdoor apparel and winter sporting goods. Range and Slope’s Matthew Simonson brings us a story of fathers, family, and bargains spelled backwa...

More poetry for the edge of the big hole:  “I met a traveller from an antique land, Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand, Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed; And on the pedestal, these words appear: My name ...
