Radults - Episode 14: Emily Kelly

Episode 14 of the Radults podcast sees Brenton and Mike road trip out to the Deathproof offices in deepest hipsterville, Fitzroy, to chat with company co-founder and Director of Publicity and Creative, Emily Kelly.  

After nabbing a fancy looking Bachelor degree in media, Emily has worked in the Australian music industry for 15 years , cutting her teeth as an overeager assistant in the Shock Records PR department, before jumping ship with her best friend Rebecca Reato to give self employment a crack under the moniker Deathproof.

The industry called immediately, landing them work on huge arena tours, niche punk rock releases and even as Soundwave’s on-site PR for it’s mammoth Metallica-headlined festival run! Since then Deathproof has gone from strength-to-strength becoming one of Australia’s premiere agencies and the first choice for many of the most notable names in the heavy music scene! (They’ve seriously worked with freaking EVERYONE)

As director of Creative, Em thrives on cooking up challenging concepts that stray beyond the confines of conventional public relations.

Episode topics include: getting started in the music industry, what exactly a music publicist does, how Deathproof choose who to represent, the importance of work/life balance, networking, knowing your audience, taking advantage of opportunities, understanding your own value, some favourite clients, expanding and evolving your skills, how personal and business ethics impact her role, how much per year being able to wear a t-shirt and no shoes to work is worth, and of course a Quintin Tarantino themed Rad Break that segues rather unexpectedly into a discussion on the notion of separating the art from the artist.
