In order for a political society to work, there has to be some sort of general agreement between the rulers and the ruled. In moral or political terms, this is often referred to as the social contract. The general idea of a social contract dates back to ancient times, but it was in the Age of Enlightenment that the idea finally took hold and became entrenched in Western societies. Many folks were talking about this idea of a social contract and the ideas varied.
