Anna Deavere Smith is an actor, performer, writer and activist whose work has been recognized with a MacArthur “Genius” Award, a Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, and a Presidential National Humanities Medal awarded by President Barack Obama. Her project, “Notes from the Field,” which has been performed widely and become an HBO special, is part of “The Pipeline Project” that is based on hundreds of interviews to shine a light on the lack of opportunities and resources for young people in poverty.

She has appeared in several Hollywood films, including Philadelphia, The American President, and Rachel Getting Married, and on televisions shows including Nurse Jackie and The West Wing. As a creative listener attuned to the harmonies and dissonance that join and splinter communities, Smith lassoes the craft of embodied performance to ignite sites for honest reckoning, hope, and healing.
