In 2008, Mark Caskey took a risk and left his employer and the coal industry he knew so well in order to make a fresh start in the oil and gas industry. Frustrated that his former company didn’t want to take advantage of the Marcellus Shale natural gas field that had recently started to develop, Mark launched his own firm called Steel Nation. He began with just $6,000 and the ability to design and oversee the construction of specialty steel buildings. Natural gas involves a different set of processes from coal, so Mark had to quickly learn the inner workings of a new energy sector. He also had to convince someone to give him a shot at building a steel structure and becoming his first client.

Thirteen years and hundreds of buildings later, Mark has built a tremendously successful company that is competitive with many of its peers who travel up to our region from Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. Mark employs a staff of professional engineers, designers, and experts in construction, maintenance, and environmental services. Today, the Steel Nation mantra is “clean, cool, quiet, and safe,” which represents its approach to pre-engineered steel building design and construction. In this episode, Mark talks about an early setback that nearly put him out of business, his strategy for launching with very little startup capital, and why it’s important to take some calculated risks in order to get started.
