Welcome to Free Thinking Friday, a brief episode where I share thoughts I've been pondering throughout the week. We recently had an academic situation that left me livid. As of the publication of this episode, it is still not resolved, but I share my frustrations related to the consequences of being part of the trophy generation, that group of kids who got participation trophies, just because they came to practice and smiled a time or two.
What are we teaching kids when they are not held accountable? If your child didn't take their math tests, and didn't show up for the make up tests, you'd expect them to fail math. If a stage actress didn't memorize her lines or choreography, it would be obvious because the audience would watch her struggle to move with the rest of the cast, and the poor timing of her lines would throw off the entire scene. So, why is it that in some situations, we cover for people who don't follow through on their commitments? Why do we teach kids that if they slack, there will always be someone there to do their work?
In this episode, I talk about what it takes to stand out and make a name for yourself -- a good name, that is. And, I elaborate on the story I told last week about Justin Baldoni and the casting in Five Feet Apart and Jane the Virgin. (I just love it when my fascination with Jane the Virgin ties back to life lessons!)
