Today is all about priorities. We all have priorities, and sometimes our priorities reflect wisdom, and sometimes…not so much.

Last week we saw what it meant in our lives - especially when it comes to our resources - to be under new ownership. We saw how all the things we have in this life were entrusted to us by the REAL owner - the Lord Almighty - and we get to accept the position of manager of all the resources He chooses to give.

So if God owns everything - if we are HIS managers, is there a place we can go, a document of some sort that outlines what the owner’s priority list is? Well, obviously there is. It’s found in the Bible. And yet, how ignorant are we when it comes to finding out about HIS priorities for HIS resources? You know there are essentially 4 ways of using money as it comes into our lives: we can... Spend it, Pay what we owe (debts/taxes), Save/Invest it, or (if there’s any left) Give it.

And for most of us – this is our order. Take a look at it: essentially we are talking ME, ME, ME, and then GOD. ME, ME, ME, God — now it doesn’t take a Seminary Graduate to figure out something… If we are truly seeking the owner’s heart when it comes to using resources that He gives to us, His managers, then it should be obvious — this is a problem!

And it’s not just a problem, according to Scripture. Oh no. Church, if this is right, if this is the BEST WAY to prioritize your resources, then answer me this: Why do so many people who prioritize like this end up broke, scraping by, living paycheck to paycheck, getting stressed about finances, and experiencing broken relationships? Seems that maybe, just maybe, THIS DOESN’T WORK.

As we begin to dive in, let’s first look at an interesting event in the ministry of Jesus. Turn with me to Luke 20, verses 20-26.

There are a few things we could unpack from this passage, but today, in light of what we’re learning about managing God’s resources, I want us to focus on the phrase: “Render unto God the things that are God’s.”
