Who was your hero growing up? Your dad or mom; a baseball star; a teacher?

For the Jewish community, Moses still is a great hero. In fact, you could say that for the Jew, Moses was all of those guys rolled into one. He freed the Israelites from slavery in Egypt… He showed God’s power through miracles, providing miraculous food and water in the desolate places, he gave the law, creating the social and religious structure for the nation of Israel. Essentially he gave the Jews their constitution and, like our forefathers who began our nation and gave us our great constitution, Moses is still highly revered today. A true hero.

However, he was also a man - a man with sin and with weaknesses. A man with flaws. And as a man, like all me, he died. And when he died, God’s people were left with a big hole to fill. Who was going to take his place?

If Moses - their hero - isn’t going to be around anymore, what are the people going to do?? Well, God is giving them a promise - a promise to send someone LIKE MOSES. He will be the one who will take over from Moses - but he will be able to overcome the flaws and short-comings of their national hero. In the KJV it says the promised one will be the prophet “like unto Moses,” but I like to call him the Dude from Deuteronomy.
