Hey everyone, and welcome to Pool School where we help you keep your pool clean and clear by answering your questions about pool maintenance.

My name is Matt and I'm the founder of SwimUniversity.com which is a website that teaches you how to take care of your swimming pool and your hot tub.

Today's question is, are liquid solar covers safe?

So first of all, what is a liquid solar cover? It's a microscopically thin layer of alcohol that sits on top of your pool and reduces water evaporation, which is a major cause of water heat loss.  Liquid solar covers don't heat your pool up, they just minimize the heat loss that comes from evaporation.

Liquid solar covers, specifically one called Heatsaver by Flexible Solutions, who we've reached out to, has been approved by the FDA and the EPA to be used in swimming pools. Its also approved by the NCAA, the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Now the calcium hydroxide that comes in the actual liquid of the liquid solar cover is just the carrier and dispersing agent.

Chemistry aside, the operative phrase is "one molecule thick." That's how thin this layer is on top of your pool. It uses such a small amount of liquid that you will not feel it, nor is there any reported case of it causing physical harm to any swimmer.

So the question is: do you want to use liquid solar covers in your pool?

You should, especially if you have a heater or you get a lot of sun in your pool and you want to keep your pool warm, it's much easier to use a liquid solar cover than having to pull the cover on and off your pool. You know the big bubble wrap cover, which is a standard solar cover.

And if you have a heater, all that heat that you're generating with the gas or electric is all leaving the pool every single night when you get all of that evaporation. So why not use something like a liquid solar cover to help keep that heat that you're paying for, that you're using natural resources for, to heat your pool, you can keep it in there.

It's kind of like an invisible Thermos lid to keep your coffee warm and it's not harmful to swimmers.

So the question is, are they safe? Yes. Should you use them? I believe you absolutely should. If you don't have a solar cover, but you have a pool heater or you get a lot of sun and you want to keep your pool warm.
