Canada Healthcare and Corporate Corruption

On Parliament Hill, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh renews his call for increased federal investments in the health-care system, with a particular focus on the hiring of more front-line medical workers. The news conference comes ahead of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s meeting on health care with Canada's premiers on February 7. Singh is joined by JP Hornick, president of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, Angela Preocanin, first vice-president of the Ontario Nurses’ Association, and Michael Hurley, president of the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions.Conservative MPs Garnett Genuis (critic for International Development), Stephanie Kusie (critic for the Treasury Board) and Pierre Paul-Hus (Quebec political lieutenant speak with reporters on Parliament Hill about their party's call for the auditor general to conduct an investigation into federal contracts awarded to the consulting firm McKinsey & Company. Conservatives will be moving a concurrence motion in the House of Commons later in the day. The Liberal government has awarded over $100 million in contracts to McKinsey since the party came into power in 2015. Genuis and Paul-Hus also respond to questions about health-care funding and a potential strike by the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC). (February 6, 2023)

Caroline Cochrane, the premier of the Northwest Territories, holds a virtual news conference ahead of her working meeting on health-care funding with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on February 7. Provinces and territories have been pushing for the federal government to increase its share of funding through the Canada Health Transfer (CHT) from 22 per cent to 35 per cent.
