Hello Everyone!

Social media is awash with black squares and arguments about how to best deal with RACISM. We thought it was  a very simple subject, really: Just Don't be a Racist!

But it turns out that as with all things in life, there are so many levels of complexity....so here are our recommendations of podcasts that have helped us get a mental grip on it all.

It's a long episode, but we blame Gyles Brandreth and his discussion about the culinary delights that are Baked Beans. So here we go:

1619 - from the New York Times

“1619” is a New York Times audio series, hosted by Nikole Hannah-Jones. The series examines the very long shadow of American slavery. If you decide to listen to anything at all in order to try to understand the US side of things, please listen to this.

About Race with Reni Eddo-Lodge

This is a podcast presented by the author of the bestselling Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race.

Featuring key voices from the last few decades of anti-racist activism, the podcast looks at the recent history that has led to the politics of today. It's "uncomfortable" listening at times, but if you want to get a grip on racism in the UK, it's a genuine must listen.

The Patdown

Episode 61 - George Floyd

Ms. Pat is a US comedian and author (check out her book Rabbit) who brings an honest, in your face, and hilarious perspective to her shows. There is a WHOLE LOT OF SWEARING, so if you are of a delicate constitution, get the swear jar ready.

Trevor Noah, via the Daily Show Ears Edition

From Comedy Central’s Podcast Network this is the Ears edition of the Daily Show.
It's presented by the brilliant and funny Trevor Noah.

And finally, a bit of a change of direction,

Something Rhymes with Purple

This is a podcast about words and language. It's hosted by Susie Dent, author and the star of dictionary corner on 8/10 Cats Does Countdown and by broadcaster and ex MP and author Gyles Brandreth.

They are a brilliant pair, and there is no end to their knowledge about the origins, meanings and insights into how and why we use the words we do.

And that's it! At the risk of overusing our favourite adjective (too late?) we think that all of the above are BRILLIANT and, as far as BLM goes, essential listening.

As always, thank you for listening! If you want more podcast recommendations follow us on Twitter at @PodTrawlers

And if you like this podcast, please do spread the word, and give it a gold star on wherever you listen to your podcasts!

Thank you also to Anna Meredith for her brilliant music, and this week also to the brilliant Childish Gambino, and the passionate and oh so articulate Kimberly Jones.
