Following a marathon session of Parliament overnight, the federal government’s contentious Religious Discrimination Bill has passed through the House of Representatives.
The government’s proposal was that religious schools would be banned from expelling students based on their sexual orientation, but those same rights were not extended to transgender students.
In a blow to the government, an amendment to protect transgender students passed with five Liberal MPs crossing the floor to vote with Labor and the crossbench.
