The great Roman Poet, Statius, once wrote, “it was fear that first made the gods in the world.” Others would later expand and expound upon his observation, including Will Durant, Edward Gibbon, and (my favorite) Admiral Hyman Rickover.

In all of those writings, we are warned and reminded that religion has its place in our history and our society, but that it is used far more often to control and abuse than to uplift and moralize. History shows us that religion is a force, but the good or bad of that force depends upon the character of the people who wield its power.

Which brings us to the former CHOP zone in Seattle, where a religious leader decided to ignore the health concerns and mandates in order to… to… to do what, exactly?
