Silvie Stacy, MD, MPH, is a preventive medicine physician and founder of LookforZebras.com. You’re a doctor; you get the reference and in this situation the Zebra is a nonclinical career. She knew from the start that she wanted to be a nonclinical physician, but there weren’t many resources out there, so for others going through the same experience, she built her blog. She just wrote the book, 50 Nonclinical Careers for Physicians (Fulfilling, meaningful, and Lucrative Alternatives to Direct Patient Care). She shares with us some of the more common, more esoteric, more lucrative, and more unexpected opportunities that are out there and how to find them.

Dr. Stacy received her MD from UMass Medical School and completed residency at Johns Hopkins, where she also earned an MPH. Since then, her work has mainly involved correctional healthcare, addiction medicine, medical writing, and utilization management. What ties all of her work experience together is the goal of helping organizations offer services and products that are rooted in evidence-based medicine.

She went from a fresh first-year medical student thinking she’d made the absolute worst mistake of her life, to a happily practicing physician with unrelenting enthusiasm about all the opportunities in and out of medicine.
