Oakland police are providing an update later this evening about last week's fatal shooting of an officer who was responding to a burglary in progress. KCBS Radio reporter Megan Goldsby will be there.

In the meantime, as the department continues to mourn the loss, the search continues for a new chief to head the department. Mayor Sheng Thao and the police commission don't appear to be on the same page when it comes to just who that should be.

The commission sent the mayor a list of three candidates, including former chief LeRonne Armstrong, whom she had fired last February. She has since stood by her decision, saying she lost faith in the chief over his handling of an officer misconduct case.

KCBS Radio news anchors Bret Burkhart and Patti Reising spoke with KCBS insider Phil Matier for his thoughts on how the killing of the Oakland police officer might affect the search for a chief.
