The incredible story of Marvin Heemeyer is a cautionary tale about an ordinary auto-repair shop owner whose grievances with the local government fueled his extraordinary desire to build a concrete and steel modified bulldozer to exact revenge. His 2-hour long rampage miraculously didn't kill anyone but demolished 14 buildings (including City Hall) and left over 7 million dollars in damages.
Rather than be taken alive by the authorities, after becoming stuck in a caved-in basement of one of the recently demolished buildings, Marvin turned his gun on himself. He left behind only a set of self-narrated audio cassette tapes along with hand-written notes detailing his final thoughts.
"I was always willing to be reasonable until I had to be unreasonable", he wrote. "Sometimes reasonable men must do unreasonable things."
Was Marvin Heeymeyer a misunderstood folk hero who finally snapped under the weight of a corrupt group of "good 'ol boy" town officials? Or just an over-hyped, victim card carrying domestic terrorist?
You decide.
