PEG Interviews Pop/PostPunk Duo Psychopets

BIO:

The Psychopets is a Swedish/French alternative pop/postpunk duo based in Gothenburg, Sweden.  The duo consists of Anna and Julien who have completely different backgrounds geographically, but have their heart in the same music genre. They both grew up with the glittery 80-ies sound, but also with the smearing distorted electric guitar sound from the grunge era of the 90-ies.

The mix of these two worlds become a genre-bending that’s melodic, raw, heavy and groovy, with elements of synth and electro.

They both share an intense interest in human behavior, psychological and societal issues, the side effects of postmodernism increasing polarization and everything that shapes the mad society we live in today. This topic is recurring in their lyrics, but always with a lot of humour and a good dose of irony.

Anna grew up in a small town near the west coast of Sweden, where she in early age started playing classical piano and clarinet. She played in the local marching band and was also a baton-twirler. As a teenager she was singing in different punk- and gothic bands. After high school she studied musical theatre at the Ballet Academy of Gothenburg for three years where she earned her diploma. That was soon followed by a busy career as a professional dancer and performing artist in musicals, TV-shows and tours in Sweden and around the world with various artists. All in the meantime she wrote her own music and lyrics and learned how to record and produce. She also worked as a songwriter for other artists, as well as being a featuring artist for Epidemic Sound and Paradox.

Julien was born in France in the late 70-ies and started playing guitar at 16 with the emergence of 90-ies rock. Learning his first riffs in his bedroom with cassettes, he started to play in college band only a couple of months later.  When he was 18 years old, he went to an audition for a touring cover band and that was the beginning of his career as a guitarist. He has accompanied French acts, but has always held his own projects aside while playing in different bands with a large palette of styles ranging from metal to hard rock to country and pop. Julien had a growing interest in producing/mixing music in the beginning of the new millenium mainly because of the frustration of not getting the sound that the bands wanted to achieve and has produced numerous rock bands through the years. In 2010, he decided to move to Sweden because of its big music industry and which leaned more towards his musical taste and he continued to play, mix and has produced Swedish and international bands in many different genres. He eventually moved slowly to work permanently as a sound engineer in 2013, but has however continued to play with bands and touring in Europe.

The Psychopets recorded their first EP last summer and will release it digitaly at the end of January.
