Being frugal in our modern world can be challenging. We are surrounded by advertisements and it seems like everyone wants to sell us something, even if we don't actually need it. They apply strategies and techniques that will make you think that you need or want to buy their products or services.

This is probably the most important first lesson in personal finance: frugality. Knowing what's essential and what's just a waste of time and money. In this area, philosophy, specifically Stoicism can be very helpful. The Stoics say that we only need very little to live a happy and fulfilling life. Once you realize that, you'll be more grateful and content with what you have right now. Try to get off the hedonic treadmill, or don't step on it in the first place, if you can.
