3 Labels That Limit You

1. The label of the past

Joshua 2:1 Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. “Go, look over the land,” he said,
“especially Jericho.” So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there.
(NIV)

Joshua 6:22   Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, “Go into the prostitute’s house and
bring her out and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her.” (NIV)

Joshua 6:25 But Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute, with her family and all who belonged to her, because
she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho—and she lives among the Israelites to this day. (NIV)

James 2:25 In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did
when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? (NIV)

Hebrews 11:31 By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those
who were disobedient.  (NIV)

Matthew 1:5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed, whose
mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse, (NIV)

1 Corinthians 1:2 To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ
Jesus, called to be saints, with all who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord,
both theirs and ours: (NKJV)

2. The label of loser

Judges 6:12-15 When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, “The Lord is with you, mighty
warrior.” 13  “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to
us? Where are all his wonders that our ancestors told us about when they said, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up
out of Egypt?’ But now the Lord has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian.” 14  The Lord turned
to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending
you?” 15  “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in
Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.” (NIV)

3. The label of not enough

1 Kings 17:10-12 So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there
gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, “Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a
drink?”  11  As she was going to get it, he called, “And bring me, please, a piece of bread.” 12  “As surely as
the Lord your God lives,” she replied, “I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a
little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son,
that we may eat it—and die.” (NIV)

1. She gave first

1 Kings 17:13   Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a
small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself
and your son.  (NIV)

Proverbs 11:24–25   One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly,
but comes to poverty. 25  A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be
refreshed. (NIV)

2. She went to work with what she had

1 Kings 17:14-15 For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up
and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’” 15  She went away and
did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her
family. (NIV)
