My 93-year-old mother in law is going to be moving in with my husband and me. When someone is too old to care for themselves, and they need to be taken care of, it’s difficult to decide where they should go. There’s plenty of options, from nursing homes, to assisted living, to hospice, to living in with a family member. Most people don’t realize how much of a financial burden that care-taking can be. Assisted living and nursing homes are not the cheapest route, but how do you prepare your home for another person, especially at such an elderly age, to live with you?

Re-organizing your bathrooms and bedrooms to make them more accessible for someone of older age, especially someone who is disabled (i.e. in a wheelchair) is the most important aspect of preparing your home. Widening the shower, adding grab bars, widening door frames, having lower appliances for them to reach, etc.; these are the things you must think about before welcoming your elderly loved ones into your home for a permanent stay.

When re-designing your home for an elderly family member, or for yourself as you age, the main thought that should run through your head is: is this functional? Although the addition may not be the prettiest, or it may not match your décor, if it’s functional, it’s worth your money. The second thought should be, will this help the home sell when the time comes? If you modify things about your home to only match your needs and preferences, you may have a harder time selling the home when the time comes.
