A man in Fort Meyers, Florida put a black silhouette sticker on his garage that represented his time in Vietnam. Although it’s not about the content of what he put on his garage, the HOA has standards that specifically state that homeowners in that neighborhood cannot alter their garage, but he did it anyway. They asked him to remove the sticker, otherwise he would be fined.

The way to avoid this is to READ the HOA contract when you buy your home. Read and understand the rules in place. If you want to alter your garage, move to a neighborhood with less strict HOA laws, or with no HOA at all. If you aren’t reading these restrictions, you are wasting the time of the HOA by forcing them to focus on your wrongdoing, when it could have been avoided in the first place, had you just read their standards.

A home warranty is not like a car warranty, it covers the major systems of the home – plumbing, electrical, appliances, cooling and heating. If something needs to be fixed, a serviceman will come out and service that system. If it needs to be replaced because it is broken or has died, sometimes they will replace the broken part, other times they may just give you a set amount of cash and allow you to go shopping for what you want on your own.
