Proverbs 29:1 He who is often rebuked, and hardens his neck, Will suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy

We are still in our selfie series.  This morning I want to talk about our self-will, also known as the spirit of stubbornness.  I would like to read you  Proverbs 29:1 in the Message translation for clarity.

The Message translation reads. For people who hate discipline and only get more stubborn, There’ll come a day when life tumbles in and they break, but by then it’ll be too late to help them.

Stubbornness by definition is unreasonably or perversely unyielding.  You know when someone is insistent on their way, despises what deems reasonable, fair, or just.  Stubbornness is rooted in self-centeredness, which is a mindset that is concerned solely with one's own desires, needs, or interests.

However, the scripture tells us that stubborn-minded individuals are paving a road to destruction. Proverbs 12:15 reads The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advise.

Those who walk with wisdom are sensitive to the counsel of others, will consider things from another’s perspective, they are not so hell-bent on their way being the only and the absolute way.

I don’t know about you but as I look back over my life, I wish I would've taken a lot of wise counsel that was offered to me.  Had I not been so caught up in self-will, I could have avoided a whole lot of pitfalls and would have dodged a lot of pain.

I have been blessed, like a lot of you all listening to me now, we have bounced back and our self-will may have deterred us but it didn’t destroy us.  But just know self-will, stubbornness and consistently pulling away from wise counsel will eventually destroy you, your dreams, and your destiny.
