In 1897 H. G. Wells wrote one of many novels that would capture the public’s imagination. The original Invisible Man novel tells the story of a mad scientist who experiments on himself with a formula that makes him unable to be seen with the naked eye. As a result of his own experiment he is driven into a spiral of madness that makes him a danger to the public at large. The Invisible Man has been adapted into films several times but this year Universal Studios and Blumhouse Productions flipped the story around in order to make it more relevant for the #metoo movement. The 2020 Invisible Man would see the story change and become a commentary on abusive relationships and those who refuse to believe a victim’s accusations of abuse. This week Kristian sits down with his friends Yvis Cannavale, Reyna Velarde, and Paul Edwards to discuss the latest version of H.G. Wells’s creation. Does the newest version of The Invisible Man make the story relevant for our times or is it just a transparent attempt to tap into the resurgence of female empowerment in our society?
