Oz 9

156 episodes - English - Latest episode: 18 days ago - ★★★★★ - 305 ratings

It's Spring 2142 (a Tuesday), and Gated Galaxies has launched its 400 Oz-8000 ships, each carrying 50,000 "resting guests" to, hopefully, a new home on a shiny, brand-new planet. Except this whole "terraform and take over" idea isn't actually the plan; the real plan is far more nefarious and involves a great deal of cackling. But those aboard the ships don't know that, so off they toodle (those that make it out of Earth's atmosphere, at least), all shiny and optimistic. This is the story of one of those ships – the Oz 9 – and its tiny crew of hopeless incompetents. So far, they've been in space half an hour and several hundred people are dead. So... bright future, clearly.

episode ninety-six: Why is there a bar on the bridge?

April 08, 2024 03:18 - 25 minutes

I DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT. Have you ever met a Kestochalian? Actually, you might have. They're sort of lovely, except when you want to thump them on the snoot. Which, to be fair, is true of a lot of living things. Also my computer. Which, if it had a snoot, would have been thoroughly thumped on today. ANYWAY, we made something for you, and if you've ever made a huge Sunday meal, this is kind of like that. We slaved all day, it'll be over in 20 minutes, and then we start over. Do I sound c...

Check out The Sprouting!

March 25, 2024 23:19 - 1 hour

Olivia frequently just gets bored watching the crew of the Oz 9 tangle themselves up in disasters of their own making, and lately she's been downloading podcasts to listen to. She recently stumbled across The Sprouting, a show about battling plants (wait for it) .... cleverly. And she liked it. Like ... a lot. She doesn't like ANYTHING, so we're all a bit shocked over here. Please take a listen to the supercut of The Sprouting, then find the show wherever you listen to podcasts! Dear listene...

episode ninety-five: Spill or be spilled

March 14, 2024 21:44 - 23 minutes

Well, cue the sultry saxophone and the wire-brushed cymbals, we're back for part II of our "noir" wormhole. We had high hopes for this one (as in, high hopes everyone would get shot and this nightmare would finally be at an end), but we're only down a tour guide, and even he just seems to have wandered off. Goldipants Detective Agency is hot on the heels of Red (aka Colin Smith aka Horace MacRory), the millionaire gangster whose morals are as slippery as his accent. Will Pluto and Donna track...

episode ninety-four: Expensive perfume and cheap shots

March 01, 2024 22:17 - 24 minutes

It's a quiet night on the mean streets of ... uhhhhh ... doesn't matter. And it's not that quiet, either. Lemme start this again. It's a Tuesday night, and the Oz 9 has slipped into yet another wormhole. But it's OK. This one comes with hats. You've been listening to: Lee Shackleford as Pluto Sarah Golding as Mrs Sheffield Bonnie Brantley as Donna David S. Dear as Dr. Theo Bromae Tim Sherburn as Colin Eric Perry as Joe Shannon Perry as Madeline Kevin Hall as Greg Kyle Jones as your ...

episode ninety-three: A Midsummer Morning After

February 14, 2024 12:00 - 26 minutes

It's part 2 of this, and then I swear, we're finished and you can go back to just suspecting how pretentious we are rather than having the receipts. We know Feb 14 can be a bit rough for some, so we wanted to give you the subtle sounds of barfing fairies to help you get through the day. Just know, we love your goofy, kooky self ALL days of the year. You've been listening to: David S Dear as Dr. Theo Bromae Kevin Hall as Greg Sarah Golding as Mrs Sheffield Eric Perry as Dr. von Haber Zetze...

episode ninety-two: A Midsummer Night's ... whatever the hell this is

February 04, 2024 17:54 - 26 minutes

As Narrator 2 says in this episode, "English majors must perforce English maj," so here's the episode you've all been dreading: the Fakespeare. Come on, stop whining, you knew it was coming. If you're not familiar with A Midsummer Night's Dream, well, there are lots of really excellent versions out there. We prefer you NOT listen to those, however, as that's going to make this seem even more torturous than being read Vogon poetry before being shot out into space. That said, it was fun to writ...

episode ninety-one: Measuring tape awareness day

January 18, 2024 22:20 - 29 minutes

This episode... it fought back, I tell you what. But we finally wrangled it into some sort of shape. I'mma go with "parallelogram," because it looks like it's about to fall over, but it's a shape, anyway. We meant to get this out when we were still in the throes of the holiday season, but hey, it's Winnie the Pooh Day, and I reckon that's worth celebrating. It's also National Michigan day, soooooo, go, Michigan, I guess. You've been listening to: Shannon Perry as Madeline and Olivia Lee Sha...

episode ninety: Science makes me affectionate

January 02, 2024 08:00 - 27 minutes

It's episode 90! And that's the best thing we can say about it. There's a lot of sampling of condiments. Word of warning: don't get between (former) Cpt. Jessie and the cheese sauce, or lives may be lost. Also, we found a crate of "blight piston bottles." Anyone know what those are good for? You've been listening to: Sarah Golding as Mrs Sheffield Bonnie Brantley as former Captain Jessie and Lady Nibble Biscuit David S. Dear as Dr. Theo Bromae Chrisi Talyn Saje as Julie Eric Perry as Dr ...

episode eighty-nine: Adorable and very merchandisable

December 17, 2023 18:16 - 23 minutes

It's nearly Christmas as I type this, and I'm bah humbugging like your least favorite neighbor, but throwing out an episode of Oz 9 always makes me happy. I like making the world just a little bit goofier and more confusing. We have some additions to our ship today, and they are stupid cute in the manner of those "got my kid a puppy" videos that are all over the socials, only these might make you cry for entirely different reasons. But we'll see, I guess; they don't have many teeth yet. Anyth...

Bonus: Take the planet

November 23, 2023 16:50 - 23 minutes

It's Thanksgiving, Oz 9 style, which means the only thing anyone has to be grateful for is surviving it. If you've ever wondered about the origin of stuffing, well, we have a theory for you. Also, were you aware you speak fluent Klep? It's true. And you didn't even have to practice. Take THAT, Duolingo. You've been listening to: Bonnie Brantley as Jessie, Donna, and Daisy Eric Perry as Joe and Jay Shannon Perry as Madeline Kevin Hall as Greg Sarah Golding as Mrs Sheffield Kyle Jones is ...

episode eighty-eight: A hairball in your haggis

November 19, 2023 12:00 - 21 minutes

We turned five years old yesterday. The podcast, I mean — Oz 9 just turned 5. How we've lasted that long, we have no idea, but we suspect it has something to do with the fact that everyone is slightly fried from the pandemic and not giving real life 100% of their attention just now. And that's cool. Real life can be a bit of a turd on a hot plate now and again, so suspending reality right alongside disbelief seems like a healthy decision. All of which to say, thanks for hanging out with us. G...

episode eighty-seven: Why does the mustard matter?

November 05, 2023 16:10 - 25 minutes

Remember those days, hanging out at the mall, thinking Spencer's Gifts was the height of counter-culture because they had festive roach clips? Yeah, me neither. I spent all my time at Waldenbooks. Anyway, get ready for a trip backwards in time to the mall. I can almost smell the Orange Julius and Cinnabon (which reminded me that I made coffee that was currently cooling in the other room, dammit. I'm back now) and hear the yelps as another pre-teen gets their ears pierced at Claire's. There's ...

episode eighty-six: Spike the gargling cow

October 01, 2023 11:00 - 27 minutes

Continuing in our endeavor to educate the public, much of the cowboy vernacular here is authentic. Well, some of it. "Brown gargle," for example, is totally legit. Should it come up on Jeopardy at some point, we expect compensation. The crew continue to explore the Oz 9, sometimes voluntarily. We know these stupid sandwich machines are trying to tell us something, but knowing that and actually understanding what that "something" is are two different things, and let's face it, this bunch have ...

Oz 9 Meet the Characters

September 17, 2023 22:35 - 51 minutes

Honestly, there's just nothing good to be gained from listening to this. It's a bunch of people old enough to know better being very silly while affecting various accents (with varying degrees of success). Good ahead and listen if you want to, but please wear headphones and do something redemptive with your hands, like making food for unhoused people or picking your nose. We'll all feel better about it. Much thanks to Sarah Golding, to whom all credit (and frankly, blame) belongs. Yer ever-...

Meet Jonathan Pezza of Curious Matter Anthology!

September 10, 2023 11:00 - 1 hour

I know, I know, I skip a lot of bonus episodes too, but srsly, give this one a listen. Not only is Jonathan smarter than the entire crew of the Oz 9 concurrently and consecutively (yes, low bar, but still), he's also got really fun things to tell us about. Hear the interview, then for goodness' sake, stick around and hear his full-cast, immersive audio adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow." Thanks as ever to John Faley, for the gorgeous Oz 9 music! Links:  Curious...

episode eighty-five: Dirty, greasy oligarchs

August 02, 2023 17:31 - 25 minutes

Exploring the Oz 9 isn't like exploring brave new worlds in the manner of highly questionable colonialists of eras past. Except for the alligators. And the swampy bits. Also not knowing what's safe to eat (hint: not bloody much). And the near-fatal encounters on a daily basis.  OK, so it's actually quite a bit like exploring brave new worlds, except for the bravery. Just... listen to the episode. Try to stay out of the quagmires, and if you do get quagged, at least wipe your feet before you g...

episode eighty-four: Would it help if I spoke stupid?

July 18, 2023 18:14 - 27 minutes

Exploration of the Oz 9 continues, and it's not going well. Though we did find some goldfish. And some bumper cars.  Traveling via vending machine is just unpredictable and not nearly as filling as you might imagine, but the crew are blundering around the ship from room to room and sandwich to sandwich, flirting with cowboys and this sentence is a bit long so I'm stopping now.  You've been listening to Eric Perry as Joe Bonnie Brantley as Jessie and Lady Nibble-Biscuit Chrisi Talyn Saje as...

episode eighty-three: In short, she is baked

June 11, 2023 20:15 - 23 minutes

I went back and read the opening paragraph that was here originally, and even I don't understand it, so I must have been really tired or possibly in a hostage situation when I wrote it. Anyway, it's gone, and though this means the subtitle now makes zero sense, it's still an improvement. In this episode, Olivia's I-drops (iDrops?) have gotten mixed up with some other substances, and, well, if you thought added chaos might cancel out existing chaos....nope. It just piles on. You've been listen...

Livestream for the Cure and Oz 9

May 14, 2023 18:43 - 3 minutes

The Livestream for the Cure starts on May 17 and probably ends abruptly with much screaming on SATURDAY (not Sunday, ooops) May 20th at 8 pm when the Oz 9 crew takes over. We hope you'll join us.  Learn more here: LivestreamForTheCure.com. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

episode eighty-two: Keep your knickers out of the biscuit tin

May 11, 2023 21:46 - 30 minutes

Our crew land on a strange planet ... and find someone truly strange.  BUT: here's your chance to hear a chunk of Dr. Theo's novel as our turnip greens attempt to evade what Joe refers to as "the stupidest way to die we've come up with yet." You've been listening to: Chrisi Talyn Saje as Julie Shannon Perry as Madeline Sarah Golding as Mrs Sheffield Tim Sherburn as Colin Eric Perry as Joe Bonnie Brantley as Jessie Kevin Hall as Greg Kyle Jones as Narrator 2 and Chris Nadolny Gourley ...

episode eighty-one: Hangover remedies and really good sunscreen

April 12, 2023 20:02 - 23 minutes

Yes, I KNOW we said January, but hey, it's January somewhere, right? The Oz 9 crew are finally (?) done with their plant-based emergency and have broken free of the Milky Way Galaxy. They're currently lurking in a galaxy that (if you're looking at it sideways and are 8 years old) has a vaguely rude shape. That should keep them entertained for a while. Anyway, they might actually get off the 9 and explore a strange new world here soon, so now's probably a good time to say goodbye. Before they,...

Bonus: That slice of Joe Pye-Weed pie

March 10, 2023 21:59 - 14 minutes

I tell ya, you turn your back for, like, three months, and someone just shoulders their way in there and takes over your ship, your characters... sheeesh. ANYWAY, if you're familiar with podcasts A Ninth World Journal or Deconstructive Criticism, you've already enjoyed the work of our own Dr. Theo Bromae, better known as David S. Dear. In this bonus episode, he gives us a glimpse of life behind the curtain. And in front of the toilet door COME ON ALREADY SOME OF US HAD RICE KUDZPIES AT SNACKT...

Hiatus: Enough with the toad orgy, Two

February 08, 2023 23:16 - 12 minutes

If you struggled through the classically complex and layered story of the last four seasons, you're not alone. It was, as Mrs Sheffield has it, "more twisty-turny than my graduate teaching assistant's insides after my AP Honours' Intestinal Inversion lecture and practicuum."  So Dr. Charles Tucket, who you may remember from another hiatus episode, The Oz 8000 Biosphere: Portrait of a Refuge, has been unthawed once again to provide some much-needed and hopefully not teeth-grittingly dull expos...

episode seventy-nine: Sand where no man is making pearls

October 23, 2022 20:08 - 25 minutes

It's possible someone dies in this episode. I mean, it's possible someone dies in EVERY episode — it's really pretty astonishing when no one does — so you should probably pay attention today so you understand the chatter around the old fishbowl at work tomorrow. Today's bonus information: a really tightly woven Italian suit can protect against some wimpier weaponry.  And just like that, another player is removed from the board. One episode left in Season Four, space monkeys. Will anyone survi...

episode seventy-eight: Is anyone else seeing wings?

September 25, 2022 22:02 - 30 minutes

Is anyone else hearing a weird ... flapping sound? And feeling a tiny bit of a breeze? But like, a weirdly hostile breeze that's just coiled up and waiting to turn into a tornado, given even a hint of a reason? Just me? Huh. Well, it's episode 78, and if you haven't learned your lesson by now, I can't help you.  Also, there will be (WAS says voice from future) a live listen-along for season-ending episode 80, so keep your eye on our Twitter (@oz9pocast) and our website (https://oz-9.com) for ...

episode seventy-seven: Mind the disco ball

August 28, 2022 17:37 - 31 minutes

Content warning: There are some big emotions in this one, so please take care of you. We're getting closer to the end of Season 4, and ... well, that's it, really. We're getting closer. Break out the confetti because you get a break from us! Well, probably. We're kind of like barnacles — we have to be scraped off and then we still leave a sticky residue. Anyway, lots going on in here, so I'll just leave you to it. Pass the sandwiches. And the tissue.... Eric Perry as Dr von Haber Zetzer and ...

episode seventy-six: Covered in goat dung and yodelers

August 14, 2022 22:21 - 23 minutes

It's entirely possible this story has spun a wee bit out of control. But then, isn't that a lot like...life? I mean, take your basic ergonomic keyboard. Don't you want to bash its tiny electronic brains out on a rock, only it was expensive and nominally doing something useful for your hands or wrists or something? While that might be an overreaction, might it also be considered an entirely understandable response to the fact that every time you try to type an exclamation point you get that we...

episode seventy-five: Mad stories of trampled relatives

July 31, 2022 22:14 - 25 minutes

Note: This is the final episode narrated by Richard Nadolny. His fabulous daughter Chris Nadolny Gourley takes over the mic in 76. Other note: despite what the credits say, this episode was edited by Sarah Golding and sound designed by Oliver Morris. (Both geniuses; give them lots of gigs and money.) Note 3: The subtitle is just in case he's googling himself. :) We'd say the pace is picking up, but seriously, when you're just going around in circles because half of your engines are blown out,...

episode seventy-four: You know where the porn stash is

July 17, 2022 19:25 - 23 minutes

Note: This episode is narrated by Richard Nadolny, so guard your heart. It's episode 74, and you know what that means.... DO you know what it means? Could you write it on a note and slip it to us during study hall, because we've got nothing. Things are just Nutty McNutface with this crew, and everyone's in the dark, literally and figuratively. Who can you trust when everyone's skulky and half the crew went to spy school but apparently no one actually read O Captain You're a Captain? Our favor...

episode seventy-three: Is that a Giant Turnip?

June 30, 2022 21:46 - 25 minutes

Warning: this is narrated by Richard, so take care of you. He didn't mean to make you sad. Brugmansia, it turns out, isn't a type of Italian leather shoe. Nor is it the third movement of something by Beethoven. And it is definitely NOT edible. But it can be stuck in one's mouth and swallowed, so of course, the bumfluff crew of Oz 9 did.  BTW, St. Leonard's Day isn't a real thing. But it should be. You've been listening to Bonnie Brantley as Jessie and Donna Richard Cowen as Leet Tim Sherbu...

episode seventy-two: Cahooty

June 11, 2022 16:50 - 29 minutes

Content warning: Richard narrates this episode, so take care of you. This episode is dedicated in his memory. Please consider contributing to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. https://afsp.org/ Massive cahooty thanks to Oliver Morris of Kane and Feels: Daytrippers without whom this episode might never have gotten edited and out. And do stay tuned for a taste of Kane and Feels at the end of the ep — it's delicious! It's episode 72, and our squad of scrambled eggs are trying despe...

Oz 9 Past, present, and (dare we say it) future

June 10, 2022 17:28 - 50 minutes

Content Warning: Big emotions around death and suicide. Before he left us, Richard recorded several episodes ahead. Hard as it is to hear his voice, it's also a joy to have a little more Narrator to share. He wanted these episodes to go out, and we want to honor that wish.  So you will hear Richard a few more times. If that's too much for you, skip on to 76, read the transcripts instead (you can find all our transcripts with their episodes on https://oz-9.com). Please do whatever it takes f...

episode seventy-one: Rumblings in the astral region

April 11, 2022 01:54 - 28 minutes

If you've never had chocolate milkweed with rosemallows, you're really missing out. On stomach upset, whiplash-inducing vomiting, an itchy rash, and unconsciousness, which is really the best part. Despite the litany of side effects, Leet is dishing up a mug just for you, so please join us aboard the Oz 9, as we head out for another entirely pointless journey. Be sure to stay till the end to hear a trailer of a much more sensible and quite fabulous science fiction audio drama: Chaika. You've b...

episode seventy: Do we have any more tuber tots?

March 21, 2022 03:10 - 25 minutes

Oh, hell, now we're getting all Lord of the Ringsy with sacred tokens and some sort of binding agent to herd them all or whatever, blah blah blah. We're back on board the Oz 9, and the crew is far more interested in their next cocktail than in, I dunno, SAVING EARTH OR WHATEVER. Although, I could murder a cosmo.... You've been listening to Sarah Golding as Mrs Sheffield Lee Shackleford as Pluto Aaron Clark as Ben Iri Alexander as Julie Eric Perry as Mr Southers Bonnie Brantley as Jessie and Donna Shannon Perry as Madeline and Olivia June Clark Eubanks as the Albatros Richard Cowen as Leet Tim Sherburn as Colin Kyle Jones as Narrator 2, and Richard Nadolny is your Narrator Our them...

episode sixty-eight: Hold our swamp hooch

January 24, 2022 05:59 - 24 minutes

Leet's been boiling up ... well, we're not sure what those are. He thought they were apples, and he was trying to make apple cider. Or maybe apple sauce, we're not really clear what he was aiming for. In any event, he ended up with something that can only be contained in these special jars the Albatros makes from clay from the bioswamp; it burns right through everything else. Anyway, if someone invites you to have a swig of swamphooch, we really suggest you run away. Maybe punch them first, b...

episode sixty-seven: I haf been tinkering vis my shavink foam

January 06, 2022 05:23 - 23 minutes

We hope you all had a great holiday season.  We didn't. Something blew up and it stunk like crazy, but we still have no idea what it was, and Dr. von Haber Zetzer's not talking. We're not sure if that's because he's guilty or in shock, but either way, we're not prying an answer out of him any time soon. You've been listening to Bonnie Brantley as Jessie and Donna Richard Cowen as Leet Tim Sherburn as Colin Aaron Clark as Le Bichon Frise Shannon Perry as Olivia and Madeline June Clark Eu...

episode sixty-six: Feels super bowel-y in here

December 20, 2021 04:42 - 25 minutes
